Durham Logistics FAQ

Which school is “best” for my move? +
As a real estate broker, I do not provide qualitative rankings or identify which schools are “best,” as school quality is subjective and depends entirely on a client’s specific instructional requirements and household routine. Instead, I provide a Technical Analysis of Assignment Data and regional infrastructure. My role is to ensure residents have the official data sets and lookup tools needed to perform their own due diligence. I recommend clients visit the NC School Report Cards and contact school administrators directly.
What is the “Growing Together” Plan? +
“Growing Together” is a comprehensive redistricting and educational plan implemented by DPS to manage facility capacity and update regional boundaries. This plan created new elementary regions and shifted assignment patterns for thousands of addresses. If you are auditing a property in Durham, it is critical to verify if the address sits in a transition zone by reviewing the Official Growing Together Map.
How does the Durham Magnet Lottery work? +
Durham offers “specialty” and Magnet schools—such as the Durham School of the Arts and Morehead Montessori—that are accessed via a centralized lottery. Unlike base schools, admission is not guaranteed by your address. Residents can view deadlines and application protocols via the DPS Magnet & CTE Portal.
Are there Year-Round options in Durham? +
Yes. DPS utilizes “Calendar Option” schools to provide logistical flexibility for residents. Some schools follow the traditional 10-month calendar, while others utilize a 45/15 balanced calendar. You can identify the calendar assigned to your node via the DPS Assignment Search.
When can I register after closing? +
DPS requires residents to be physically living in the home to finalize enrollment. You will typically need a finalized Closing Disclosure (CD) or a signed lease, along with two utility bills, to establish domicile. Review the full list of Enrollment Documentation Requirements before your moving date.
